Knives in luggage (in the hold)

Can you carry knives in your luggage that goes in the hold on flights or are all knives illegal?

There%26#39;s a good little shop upstairs in Rio that sells all sorts of cool decorative blades but I%26#39;m not sure on the rules on getting them out of the country.

You can always ship them.

Knives can be put in checked luggage, just not in your carry-on.

My friend did buy one of those knives and we just mailed it home to avoid any possible hassle.

The tsa allows knives in check-in luggage.

Thanks vp03 that%26#39;s comprehensive - seems like you can put near enough anything in checked luggage!

Does TSA worldwide though or is that just internal American flights?

About 2 years ago we traveled to Vegas and when we were unpacking in our room my folding knife fell out of my jacket. It%26#39;s about a 3'; blade and was in the inside chest pocket where it always is and I just put the jacket on (from MN in January) and got on the plane.

Now while that isn%26#39;t allowed of course and I would have left it at home, I didn%26#39;t even think about it. I took the jacket off and put it in a security bin along with keys, my wallet, cell phone and belt... and they sent it through.

Meanwhile my wife had to toss out a nice little bottle of lotion because of the security restrictions. Great job TSA.

Similar thing happened to us gm. Husband had a small pocket knife in his carry-on bag. Went thru security both coming and going. We did not notice it was in there until we actually took everything out of the bag at home. Usually the bag stays half packed ;)

Knives are definitely allowed in checked baggage on both domestic and international flights.I%26#39;ve had them in checked bags without any problems.
