Strange question, I know, but am wondering how do people who require oxygen make any trips? Am wondering because have an elderly relative who I am considering if we should invite to wedding in LV? Requires oxygen, but I know you can%26#39;t take tanks on planes. Certainly, the elderly must still travel, don%26#39;t they? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Anyone w/experience flying w/someone who needs Oxygen?
We had an issue with a person who needed oxygen on our flight in December. I can only give my expeirence from sitting near where this was happening. They had called the attendent and told her midflight that the woman needed oxygen, they told them they could divert the flight to another airport and give it to her. Well they ended up not doing that and using a Nebulizer(sp???) and that got her through the flight.
I am by no means a health expert, but I would ask a doctor for options. I am hoping that there has to be options for people with health issues.
Anyone w/experience flying w/someone who needs Oxygen?
Thank you, but I mean for those elderly who ALWAYS have those nasal things in and carry a tank with them, not an emergency situation that may arise.
I have no personal experience but I did find this on the tsa site:
Federal regulations prohibit airlines from allowing passengers to bring their own oxygen canisters aboard to use during the flight. Passengers who use oxygen canisters must purchase canisters from the airline for use during the flight. However, some airlines do permit passengers to bring aboard oxygen concentrators, which do not contain oxygen, and use them during the flight. Policies vary from carrier to carrier, so be sure to check with your airline well in advance.
Check this site for further information:
tsa.gov/travelers/…2
That site actually contains a lot of information if you explore it. It contains a list of all the airlines that will supply their own oxygen to a passenger.
Not a strange question at all - people fly every day with medical needs, including O2.
You asked for advice - this is the best you will receive: CONTACT THE AIRLINE
';but I know you can%26#39;t take tanks on planes. '; How do you know this? You CAN take needed O2 onboard CONTACT YOUR AIRLINE
Thank you so much - these are most helpful sites to me!!
as an example this is southwest%26#39;s policy. this may not be your airline - but since you will CONTACT YOUR AIRLINE you will know what yours is
Portable Oxygen Concentrators
While Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) devices may be brought onboard our flights, in accordance with Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) No. 106, 14 CFR Part 121, only the AirSep FreeStyle, AirSep LifeStyle, Inogen One, Respironics EverGo, and SeQual Technology Eclipse POC models are approved for use during flight.
AirSep FreeStyle, AirSep LifeStyle, Inogen One, Respironics EverGo, and SeQual Technology Eclipse POC Conditions that Must Be Met:
The POC may only be used in its battery-operated mode. Southwest Airlines does not have electrical outlets onboard for commercial product use.
To be used onboard the aircraft, the AirSep FreeStyle, AirSep LifeStyle, Inogen One, Respironics EverGo, and SeQual Technology Eclipse POCs must have a label attached indicating that it has been approved for use in aircraft.
The Customer must have a sufficient number of fully charged batteries to cover the duration of the flight and anticipated delays, plus one extra battery for unanticipated delays. Extra batteries must be packaged for carryon in a manner to prevent short circuit. Battery terminals must either be recessed or packaged so as to prevent contact with metal objects, including terminals of other batteries.
The Customer must have a letter from his/her physician on letterhead with an issue-date of no more than one year prior to flight departure date. You may have your physician draft his/her own letter or have your physician select the link and print and fill out our Physician Consent Form. (This document will only be accepted if it is printed on the physician%26#39;s letterhead.)
Regardless of which option you choose, the physician%26#39;s letter must state:
whether the user is able to operate the device and recognize and respond appropriately to its alarms, and if not, that the user is traveling with a companion who is able to perform these functions
the phases of the flight (taxi, takeoff, cruise, landing) during which use of the device is medically necessary, and
the maximum flow rate corresponding to the pressure in the cabin under normal operating conditions. (Cabins are pressurized to an altitude of 8,000 feet.)
The health and safety for your elderly relative, as well as the others on the flight, will be a concern for the agent, crew and captain. In the end it will be up to them if your relative can safely fly.
Hi Momfran,
I got married in Boston 3 years ago and the whole family travelled over from Ireland including my mother, who like your relation, required oxygen. We contacted the airline and they were able to facilitate my mother with an oxygen mask for the journey. We had pre ordered tanks, enough for the duration of our stay, and they were delivered to the hotel the day before my mother%26#39;s arrival. We just googled oxygen tank suppliers and faxed them an order along with a letter from my Mother%26#39;s doctor. It would be ideal if you had someone in LV before this relative%26#39;s arrival to ensure you get the tanks prior to their arrival and to meet them at the airport with the oxygen tank.
My mother had an excellent stay and was delighted to get a chance to visit the U.S. again.
i was just on a flight home from jamaica last month and there was a young girl that went through 4 oxygen tanks on the flight.
the airline attendants seemed well versed in how to handle the situation... they did need about 20 minutes longer at the gate to properly load in all the tanks. (they put them in overhead compartments) and throughout the flight the attendants helped the girl%26#39;s family with changing the tanks.
it didn%26#39;t really seem to be a problem, everyone involved seemed well prepared.
that was on an air canada flight - fyi.
i would suggest just calling the airline you%26#39;re thinking of traveling on and discussing it with them.
